Refresher course in physics
A refresher course on “Selected Topics in Engineering Physics” was organized from 3rd October to 13th October at ITM, Gwalior to incorporate the selected topics in Engineering Physics introduced in the revised syllabus. The topics like Development of Quantum Mechanics (Without Mathematical details), Applications of time independent & time dependent Schrodinger equation pertaining to various fields of Engineering, Concept of band gap : Brillouin
zone (Kroing Penny model), effective mass, density of state, Fermi level & Fermi surface and an Introduction of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology. The refresher course was attended by selected students of ITM & IITM and the physics faculty of ITM & IITM and other engineering institutions of Gwalior. Prof. Y. M. Gupta delivered the expert lectures and the course was coordinated by Dr. S. S. Chauhan.
National Seminar on Recent Advances in Thin Film Technology
Contemporary advances and rapid growth in thin film technology provide challenge to our academic institution to prepare engineering students with an
ability to apply knowledge of science and technology for various aspects of Engineering, ITM Gwalior has taken the initiative by organizing the two days National Seminar on “Recent advances in thin film technology”.

The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. K.L. Chopra, Advisor, Thin film Lab, IIT, Delhi and Former Director IIT, Kharagpur. The eminent speakers of the seminar were Dr. L.K. Malhotra, Prof. Emritus, Thin film lab, IIT Delhi; Dr. R.K. Kotnala, Scientist, NPL, Delhi; Prof. S.A. Hashmi, Delhi University; Dr. Neeraj Jain, Dr. D.C. Tiwari and Dr. P. Rajaram from Jiwaji University, Gwalior. In the inaugural talk Prof. K.L Chopra discussed the development of thin film technique and various methods of fabrication of nanomaterial thin films. About 200 scientists, academicians, researchers and engg. students from various Universities of all parts of India participated in the seminar. About 125 oral and poster presentations were presented in the seminar for the benefit of the engineering students some tutorial sessions were also organised.

National Science Day Celebration ISTE Student Chapter of ITM celebrated National Science Day on 28th February, 2008 and organized a series of programs for 3 days commencing from 26th February, 2008. The focal theme of these programs was “Mother Earth: Global Warming”.

The programme was inaugurated by unveiling the Bronze statue of Sir CV Raman by Prof. A.N. Mitra, S.S. Bhatnagar, Awardee and Former Head Physics Department, Delhi University. Keynote address on Raman effect was given by Prof. A.N. Mitra. Co-curricular activities started 2 days in advance viz. Drawing Competitions (topic Global warming), Science skit and documentary film on Nature’s beauty and Environmental problems. Two movies were screened on National Science Day. “Kayakalp” a movie produced by BARC based on renovation of Apsara reactor shows India’s capacity for Nuclear Power. The second was the World Famous Movie “Day After Tomorrow” by Rolland Emirick based on impact of Global warming on earth:

On the last day a multimedia presentation on Fred Pearce’s “The Last Generation” was given Shri Ramashankar Singh, Chairman, ITM Universe and Ravindra Singh Rathore, Director, ITM Universe.

The movies & presentation were an eye opener for students & faculties to consider the threat of global warming and take up the challenge positively.
Atom for Peace
Institute also organised a seminar on “Atom for Peace” in collaboration with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai during the month of February 2008. The main eminent speaker of this seminar was Dr. R.K. Sharma, Head Media Relation and Public Awareness Section, BARC, explained about the ratio isotope in health care and spin off technology. On this occasion Sh. U.D. Malse, Scientific Officer, told us about how nuclear power energy can be used for mankind. He also explained about the working of nuclear reactor. Prof. Manoj Shrivastava, shared his views on the use of atomic energy in agriculture. Dr. Ramamurthy acquainted us with the HRD and training programmes in BARC. A film entitled ‘Kayakalp’ produced by BARC was shown during the Science Day Celebrations on Feb. 26, 2008.

Training programs on industrial process automation: Department of Electronics & Instrumentation organized three month evening course beginning from April 2008 on industrial process automation in which students of final year were exposed to recent techniques and tools used in plant design, plant maintenance, and criteria of device selection as per requirement of plant design, erection, procurement & commissioning industries.
