The university traces its roots to 1890, when Britain's second polytechnic was opened near the Thames at Woolwich to teach practical and commercial skills to London workers. An innovator from the start, the polytechnic pioneered the country's first part-time day-release and sandwich courses. Over the years a range of specialist organisations have joined the institution, giving it the diverse strengths it has today in subjects such as teacher training, architecture, engineering and history. The name Thames Polytechnic was adopted in 1970 and university status awarded in 1992.

       The university is proud of its diverse student body. People from more than 100 countries choose to study at Greenwich, part of an international student community of 4,000. Services for students with disabilities or who have dyslexia give support to more than 1,000. Many of our black and other ethnic-minority students participate in a mentoring scheme which pairs them with highfliers in the City and elsewhere. Students benefit from a research environment where staff share their expertise and specialist facilities. At Greenwich we set high standards for teaching quality and provide professional training opportunities for all lecturers. We also measure students' views on our services through our annual student satisfaction survey, and if shortcomings are found we address them.

The School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences (CMS) combines one of the oldest academic disciplines, mathematics, with one of the newest, computing. The programmes offered equip the students to solve practical problems in commerce and industry by using cutting edge technologies. The school was an early pioneer in computing degree programmes and was one of the first to combine mathematics with computing, giving rise to a new kind of mathematics programme.

CMS has several computing laboratories with a wide selection of machines. The equipment ranges from some of the latest parallel processing technology to full multimedia computers with music keyboards and video editing facilities.

Research: Research at CMS is internationally recognized and focuses on solving important real life problems. The Exodus software developed within the school has won a number of national and international awards, including a Queen’s Anniversary Prize. Exodus combines software engineering, mathematical modeling, multimedia technology and information systems to help understand how people behave when escaping from fires.

The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences in the University of Greenwich has gained wide experience in delivering postgraduate courses over the past decade.

The portfolio of Masters degrees offered by the School is divided up between three departments: Computing Science, Information Systems and Multimedia, and Mathematics. The School has also delivered a successful collaborative programme, the final year of the BSc (Hons) Computing, to Approved Centres, since 1998.
